Burt Todd always dreamed big. As a young lad during the early 1930s, the scion of a Pittsburgh family steeped in wealth earned in the steel, glass and banking industries imagined himself as a mini Al Capone and headed off to the Windy City to stake his new territory in a life of crime. Before Todd could hop a train to Chicago, a local cop stopped the 7-year-old in his fledgling gangster tracks and returned him to his home. That was just about the last time anyone or anything prevented Todd from reaching a destination -- no matter how remote.

Known as the man who opened the central Asian nation of Bhutan to the world, Todd and his new bride in 1952 trekked to the tiny, nearly inaccessible mountainous country on a trip so exotic and risky National Geographic magazine covered the journey. When he wasn't globetrotting, Todd trained fighter pilots during World War II, dabbled in marketing schemes like selling Filipino sea-grass baskets, and exposed Bhutan to the world through a series of unique postage stamps made of steel, silk and other non-traditional materials.

Though Todd died in 2006, his legend will live on during a sale this Saturday conducted by Mark Ferry Auctioneers. Held on Todd's beloved Foxley Farm in Ligonier, the sale brings forth an eclectic mix of artwork, firearms, a carved Dentzel carousel horse, a Sheraton-style banquet table that stretches to nearly 16 feet, glassware, equestrian art and riding outfits.

A public preview will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday with the sale starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The preview and sale will be on the Foxley Farm, 118 Foxley Lane, Ligonier.

At the heart of Concept Art Gallery's sale this Saturday is the collection of Diana Caplan, who operated a modern design studio in the city for many years. A 1950s Andy Warhol illustration will put its best foot forward in this sale. According to Berkovitz, the simple line drawing of a high-heel shoe bears an inscription penned by the artist's mother, who lived with him in New York City at the time.
