New lights will save Ankeny $10,000 annually
Bids are to be sought within the next few weeks on a lighting project that is expected to save the city of Ankeny thousands of dollars in energy costs, officials said.
Earlier this year,The company's products and bulb manufacturing process are certified by Underwriters Laboratories, compact fluorescent a leader in LED evaluation and standards. These bulbs use 5 Cree light emitting diodes, Ankeny and Urbandale leaders joined forces to apply for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block grants to purchase light-emitting diode, or LED, lights for city street lights. The total award was $290,860, which is being divided between the two cities.
Matt McQuillen, assistant to the Ankeny city manager, said officials are working with the Howard R.LED Tess bulbs from Elemental LED are rated to last 50,000 hours, about 15 times longer than a standard 4 led tube 0W bulb. So with 80 percent lower energy consumption and dramatically fewer replacements, Green Co.LED Tess bulbs from Elemental LED are rated to last 50,000 hours, about 15 times longer than a standard 4 led tube 0W bulb. "The hope is to bid the project together after the first of the year and have all the retrofits done to the street lights no later than June 2011," McQuillen said.
McQuillen said Ankeny will retrofit 174 different streetlights to the energy-saving LEDs.
