Keigo Higashino's mysteries flying off the shelves in China

Chinese editions of Japanese mystery writer Keigo Higashino's books are flying off the shelves here and in other cities, just two years after the first translation of his works appeared in China.

For example, in the overseas literature section of Shanghai's City of Books, the towering "culture street" landmark on that city's Fuzhou Road, books by Higashino, 52, are prominently displayed.

There, young couples and students who came to browse can be seen thumbing through such novels as "Yogisha X no Kenshin" (The devotion of Suspect X) and "Byakuya-ko" (Journey under a midnight sun) by Higashino.

One of the publishing houses behind the phenomenon is Thinkingdom Media Group Ltd., based in Beijing, which translated "Madogiwa no Totto-chan" (Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window), by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a bestseller in Japan in the 1980s.. But he conceded that it wasn't easy for him to have Higashino's "entertainment-oriented" works published.

"I persisted and finally overcame opposition from the executives," Zhao said.

Each of the three books published this past spring had an initial print run of 20,000, which is uncommon in China.

"In China, it is normal to print 6,000 to 8,000 copies in the beginning.
